Sustainable Societies

Finding Purpose and Inspiration

This website and the resulting podcasts are the result of a final course project for the course UPPP H30F: Cities as Focal Points for Problems and Solutions at the University of California, Irvine. This website and the related podcasts seek to elucidate transportation sustainability as it related to the two cities of Riverside and Long Beach and offers both problems and possible solutions to this in both cities.

This project was inspired by the Sustainable Societies sequence and in particular by a lecture given by Professor Hyland in the Transportation Department at UCI. Transportation sustainability was not something that we had considered would be important, but that we knew would be integral to our understanding of sustainable cities. Transportation and modes of transportation are very important for every person to efficiently and effectively manuever around the large city. Thus, this is an important topic to research and to propose problems and solutions for.

Main Outcomes

Here are also some of the main findings that we found through this research project that we would like to share, so that everyone can get a ‘gist’ of what the content of our podcasts entails and to demonstrate aligning our findings with the course outcomes of UPPP H30F.

* Transportation Sustainability is a focal point for urban planning and for cities as both a problem and a place of intervention for possible solutions. This is applicable both to the cities of Riverside and Long Beach. The issue of transportation sustainability can be analyzed best through the lens of people living in the area who use the public transit system.

When thinking of transportation sustainability, thinking of it as a system helps to simplify and consolidate infrastructure and transportation systems.
